Major Sammie D. Hoff launched in an F-4C Phantom fighter on a mission over southern North Vietnam. While over Quang Binh Province, NVN, it was hit by enemy fire and shot down. In 1989, 23 years after he was shot down, his remains were returned from North Viet Nam, and buried with full military honors.

Don was a friend of my Mother's.He was in the 19th Army Engineers, same unit as my Dad. During Kasserine Pass, he was in a machine gun placement, and fired on approaching German tanks pointing them out to the others. He was killed by return fire. the unit wrote to my Mom afterwards. little by little the letters tapered off except for one, my Dad....

SGT Valles was one of the most squared away NCOs I ever worked with.  She was not assigned to my platoon, but traveled with my convoy every time I was a convoy commander during battalion movement (9 times during major combat operations!).  The Soldiers respected her, as did the officers.  She was the second American female Soldier to be killed in Iraq.  Rest in peace, SGT Valles.

Victim of Agent Orange

Sgt Wall was the uncle that I never knew. He enlisted in February 1941, nine months before I was born, and was KIA during operations near Aix-en-Provence, France six days after Operation Anvil, the invasion of Southern France. Uncle "June" was a tank commander, shot by a sniper as he connected a tow cable between his tank and a disabled tank. Awarded the Silver and Bronze Stars.

Flying in the backseat of an RF-4 out of Ton Sonute AB, conducting IR recon over South Viet Nam, aircraft called in "feet dry" (back over land from over the ocean). Last transmission received. Wreckage of the a/c never found. Status MIA until declared KIA. Name is on The Wall.
