GILLIS, DENNIS A., Ret. CFPD Sgt., 55, of Sharon Drive, died unexpectedly Thursday at home. He was the husband of Joyce S. (Sasso) Gillis and had been married more than 33 years.
He was born in Providence a son of the late Doulgas E. And Anna (Broderick) Gillis. He has lived in Cumberland for the last 25 years previously living in Central Falls for 6 years..
Mr. Gillis was a member of the Central Falls Police Department for 20 years retiring in 1999 as a Sergeant and then served in the Auxillary police for five years. He was later employed at IMC Management and was the director of training for that company for the last 8 years. Mr. Gillis was a Master at everything he touched. He was a master sharpshooter, archer, wood carver, an avid fisherman and hunter and gun collector and loved the outdoors. He was a marksmanship instructor at several police departments. He also participated in the Civil War re-enactment in Gettysburg.
Besides his wife he leaves 2 daughters, Heather Marie McCabe of Cranston and Cheryl Anne Gillis of Cumberland; 2 brothers, Donald Gillis of Cumberland and David Gillis of Florida. He also leaves 3 granddaughters, Brianna Gillis, Casie and Amanda McCabe and nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Douglas Gillis.
His funeral will be held Tuesday at 8:45 AM from the Costigan O'Neill Funeral Home, 220 Cottage St. Pawtucket, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial in St. Basil the Great Church, Skyview Dr. Lincoln at 10 AM. Relatives and friends are invited and may call, Monday 4-8 PM. Burial with Military Honors will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cumberland.
